An under-recognized master of street photography, the primarily self–taught Louis Faurer (1916–2001) was associated with the so-called New York School of street photographers active from the 1930s to the 1950s. Faurer’s photographs often bring forth his interest in the psychology of his subjects. In this image of an entwined couple at Penn Station in New York City, Faurer creates a dramatic, intriguing moment; his subjects appear on the brink of an emotional embrace, yet the intensity of the man’s grip on his companion, and her unsure footing, create speculation of a different turn of events.
