In this photograph by Pittsburgh based Ryan Lammie a vintage Zenith Royal 50 Transistor Radio has been spray painted gold, turning this historical communication object into a shining, trophy-like form. As an object once used by many families as a primary source of entertainment or information, Lammie’s photograph gives the object a new life. Instead of considering the radio for its auditory qualities, we can ponder it as a purely visual object instead. Lammie’s work has been featured in the North East Issue (110) of New American Paintings, the 2014 Sabika Fashion Show, the 103rd AAP Annual Exhibition at the Westmoreland Museum of Art, the Pittsburgh Biennial, and Next Pittsburgh.
