Dairy Queen

Archival pigment print

Magnum Square print sale in partnership with Aperture Edition, donated anonymously

For years, Justine Kurland has traveled the country with her 4 x 5 camera and her young son, encountering and photographing fellow travelers in grand natural settings. Her subjects range from runaways, modern day hippies, mothers, and children. Her subjects often seem to be seeking a kind of escape, and respite in the landscape. In this image, three young women eat ice cream cones in the tall grass by a Dairy Queen. Although they are only a few yards from the asphalt parking lot, they seem engrossed in their own world, free, at least for a moment.
