Stephen Shore has had a keen interest in ordinary scenes of everyday life since the early 19070s. He was one of the first fine art photographers to work almost exclusively in color. In 1971, Shore famously drove across the country, obsessively snapping color photos of motel rooms, fast food meals, parking lots, and other seemingly unmemorable objects and experiences, for what became his landmark book “American Surfaces”. This image of a small pool and an inflatable swan seen through a hotel room window is an excellent example of Shore’s eye for color and humor, as well as his ability to capture a distinctly American pathos.
