Jacob Haupt’s photographs can be located somewhere among performance art, cosplay, sculpture, and fan fiction. Haupt’s images use pop culture as metaphor and mirror for addressing what he calls “the tragedy of becoming an adult.” In his series Gloom, Haupt uses candy colored camp and an earnest sorrow to perform the myth of Batman, a character based in tragedy and anger, on a perpetual quest for justice. Here, Haupt plays Batman, holding a smaller Batman in the pieta pose from Michelangelo's famous Renaissance sculpture. Haupt creates fan art with great care, elevating subjects of personal importance that are commonly thought of as lacking depth.
