This image belongs to Tim Carpenter’s series *The ancien régime". This black and white print, made in the heat and humidity of central Illinois in summer, takes its inspiration from the great early 20th century photographer Eugène Atget. In particular the blown–out skies and hazy foliage call to mind Atget’s prints of Paris and Versailles. In his series Carpenter focuses on the formal interactions between plants, trees, and buildings, and uses these images to consider what is “ancient” and what is more ephemeral, like a “régime.” Carpenter received an MFA from the Hartford Art School and co–founded TIS books, an independent photobook publisher.
