Duane Michals is one of the great photographic innovators of the 20th century, widely known for his work with sequences, story telling, and handwritten text. In the 1960s, Michals brought a new and lyrical mixture of humor, wit and pathos to photography, at a time when the field was often defined by gritty street photography. The Once and Always Now is a sequence that transports you, frame by frame, into the dream of a young man. As the dream focuses on faces in an old class portrait, Michals’ handwritten text meditates on the fallibility of memory and the brevity of dreams.
