The High Museum of Art in Atlanta commissioned Shane Lavalette to create a series of photographs for the museum’s 2012 exhibition, Picturing the South. As a native of the Northeast, Lavalette found himself connecting to the landscape primarily through its traditional music, such as blues and gospel. In this image of a young boy holding a banjo in a misty field, Lavalette captures an element of what helped create an entry point for him into the region’s rich history. Lavalette is an American photographer, independent publisher, and the director of Light Work, and was recently awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.
