This image from Lydia Panas demonstrates the artist’s practice of powerfully contemplating the relationship between the photographer and her subjects. This image comes from Panas’ series, Promised Land, where her images speak to the contradictory expectations and double standards imposed upon young women. The young girl pictured here insists on being seen as herself, steadfastly meeting our gaze, even as she assumes a classical female pose and wears a paper crown. Panas' work has been exhibited widely, she holds degrees from Boston College, the School of Visual Arts, and New York University’s International Center of Photography. She has two monographs, Falling from Grace, Conveyor Arts, and The Mark of Abel, Kehrer Verlag.
