The women and girls in Nydia Blas’ photographs glow, especially in this regal and striking self portrait. The series it belongs to, The Girls Who Spun Gold, takes its title from a book of the same name, an African–American adaptation of “Rumpelstiltskin”, about a woman who is chosen to become the wife of the ruler of the land, because of her ability to spin gold. Blas’ photographs create spaces that center on young, Black females experiencing joy, dignity, pride, love, and vulnerability. Blas received her MFA from Syracuse University and is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.
