Using a female body and draped fabric, Whitney Hubbs calls attention to the performance of staging and gesturing in front of a camera. Covering the entirety of the body in a lustrous black fabric, and laying three cracked, delicate egg shells at the base of the image, Hubbs makes this photograph feel like a kind of contained performance. The figure enveloped in fabric resists any attempt to be gazed at directly, redirecting our attention to the act of performing for a camera, and the politics of directing and creating an image. Hubbs holds an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, and is currently a professor at Alfred University.
