These three images, Boys Playing Polo, Shadow, and My Portrait as An Artist As A Young Man belong to Andre Bradley’s series, The Dark Archives, a larger, provocative exploration of Bradley’s memories of childhood. Part story, part lyrical investigation, these images aims to upset the linguistic and visual constrictions placed on black males. Two self portraits, one tender and one ominous, are paired with a photograph of a mural of young Black men playing polo in Philadelphia, where Bradley lives. This triptych serves as commentary on being an artist, on being a young black man, and on being Andre Bradley. Bradley received his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and has been a fellow at Image Text Ithaca, Hampshire College’s Creative Media Institute, and the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center.
