Leonard Suryajaya creates photographs that contain layers of cultural expectations, selfhood, personal displacement, family, and intimacy. His bold, colorful images muse on ideas of what constitutes identity—whether in terms of sexuality, heritage, race, or gender. A Chinese-Indonesian immigrant, Surajaya is no stranger to being faced with having to define and explain these elements of himself for strangers, yet his images invite viewers to consider a fuller examination of what it means to live in a transnational society. Suryajaya holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his work is included in collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Photography.
