Lot 99
Eli Durst

Archival pigment print
20 x 16 inches

Donated by the artist

In his series The Community, Eli Durst photographs around and inside church basements and community centers, exploring how we strive for community in America. In this image, a young family stands outside with their infant child, nearly camouflaged within the crowded cluster of tree branches. As they offer a bottle to the baby held within the young woman’s arms, the couple’s own limbs mesh with that of the tree branches, forming a brief moment of natural security and respite. Durst teaches photography at the University of Texas in Austin, and was the winner of the 2016 Aperture Portfolio Prize and a 2017 Aaron Siskind Individual Photographer's Fellowship Grant.
