Materials & Processes: Imaging the Elements of Photography focuses on a fascinating trend of works that use elements of photographic tools and processes as the subject matter of the images. Normally, the photograph is seen as a window on the world, and the physical properties of the image (paper, screen, ink, pixel, silver) are overlooked.
The artists in Materials & Processes direct our attention to the materiality of photography by making the unseen elements of the image the subject of their work in ways that are surprising and beautiful. Each artist mines different photographic traditions to create an abstract language that is unique, yet utterly photographic.
The exhibiting artists in Materials & Processes are Daniel Boardman, April Friges, Jessica Labatte, Andy Mattern, Zach Nader, and Julie Weber.
