The Sun Will Set In The Same Place

2016
Archival Pigment Print with Velvet Lamination
44 x 55 inches
Edition of 3 + 1AP, signed stick on verso

This photograph from Rafael Soldi belongs to a series of work which strives to look at, "internal dialogues and moments when life and its darkest facets can offer monumental symbolism". The rays of the sun seem to pulse from within darkness - a grand moment of light within an otherwise completely black photograph. The title of the image, The Sun Will Set In The Same Place, is a gesture toward the serenity found through a simple act of recognition - despite any difficulty, the sun will continue to set in the same place. The brilliance of the sun breaking through the dark opens the door for viewers to tap into those parts of ourselves we most often shy away from acknowledging.

Rafael Soldi is a Peruvian-born, Seattle-based artist and curator. He holds a BFA in Photography & Curatorial Studies from the Maryland Institute College of Art. His monograph, Rafael Soldi: Imagined Futures was published by Candor Arts in 2020.
