Talk

Misplaced Fortunes & Maxo Vanka

Join us for a conversation with Pittsburgh based artist Ross Mantle and Silver Eye's Executive Director David Oresick on Mantle's extraordinary new book Misplaced Fortunes. Mantle will delve into the book's deep and intricate connections to the legendary Pittsburgh Murals of Maxo Vanka, and the conversation will be immediately followed by a tour of the murals.

Misplaced Fortunes weaves together a tapestry of photographs, original and found text, historic imagery, and typographic symbols. The book operates as a literal and metaphoric treasure hunt. Using the myth of General Edward Braddock’s pay-chest as a starting point, this lyrical book navigates three centuries of history, legend and lies to explore America’s colonialist ambitions, its obsession with progress, and the stories we choose to tell about it.
