Workshop

Moment by Moment: Photography and Mindfulness

Led by Vania Evangelique, Moment by Moment is a two-day community workshop on finding and creating spaces of stillness, for all ages and welcoming residents of 15224.

This workshop is an opportunity to pause. To take in. To experience. To seek. To find again all the beautiful things that we often miss. We are people who are constantly consumed with distractions. Individuals who are booked and busy and navigate through a culture that forces us to find our value and worth through productivity.

Throughout our wanderings in the world, we often pass by moments of joy. Of excitement. Of things that call us to pause and remind us of the world that’s bigger than our own, and the moments that validate our part in it.

This 2 day workshop will focus on having conversations on stressors, work, and the many ways that we are distracted, and hold space where we can have honest conversations on how we’d like to envision our lives differently from what we’ve lived so far.

Participants will be asked to take their cameras–and with minimal distractions as possible–walk around their neighborhood or places they frequent and stumble across “new” moments of joy.

The 2nd day will be a show & tell, where we show off some of our created images and discuss ways we can incorporate pause, not just in our artistic practice but into our lives.

Participating Artist

  1. Journeying into some unknown territory, artist Vania Evangelique is currently navigating her practice, slowly, tenderly, and organically.

As Zeal Eva, she’s worked within the realm of painting, photography and curation being a visual storyteller who celebrates the black experience through artworks that bring to life a nostalgic feeling of home. Her work, being deeply rooted in personal history and the histories of the communities that she navigates, she explores the intersections of the natural world and the built environment that highlight shared experiences, document the present and look towards the future.

As an artist, her work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions including Today//Yesterday at Bunker Projects and Gentle Landing at Silver Eye Center of Photography. A collaborator with Associated Artist of Pittsburgh, Boom Concepts, she previously served as Head Curator for The Coloured Section Arts, co-curated 2 exhibitions with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, was artist in residence at BrewHouse Association, and curated Lay Bare through the curatorial residency at Brew House.

Currently embarking on what we will call a “cocoon phase” in her artistic journey, Vania Evangelique is working to rediscover, to find, to seek new ways of being both an artist and a person in a way that feels like home all while letting love guide the way.
