Silver Eye Center for Photography
1015 East Carson Street
We are dedicated to celebrating photography,
both as an expressive art form and as a medium
that brings to light the details and larger stories that
influence and inform an understanding
of ourselves and the world.
Close to Home is open October 24, 2014 through January 10, 2015.
Home is both the place you live and the place where you used to live. It is your family and your neighborhood and your city. It is a place of comfort and apprehension. You may look forward to going home all day long, or you haven't been there in years, and you have no plans to visit. Home is a complicated place.
The seven artists in Close to Home use photography to explore different notions about home as a physical place with deep emotional connections. In doing so, they show us an extraordinary range of feelings toward home: tenderness, anxiety, love, and heartache. Perhaps photography is the ideal medium to express these feelings about home because of its ability to depict complicated things, in the most straightforward way, like a family portrait.

Crowdsource is a brand new way for the Silver Eye community to share their work and discover photography. From September 30th to October 10th we invite anyone making photographs to stop by the gallery and share one or two prints for display. Real live physical prints, on paper with silver, or ink. The kind you can hold with your hands, no frames, no glass, just photos. New projects, old prints, pretty photos, and weird pictures, we want them on our walls for everyone to see. The gallery will be open for visitors to see the prints as they go on the wall.
Everything will culminate in a Crowdsource Print Party on Friday, October 10th from 7:00 – 10:00 pm. Come celebrate photography in Pittsburgh with us and if you see a picture you like, maybe take it home with you while supporting Silver Eye.
