Dylan Hausthor’s photographs don’t tell clear stories. They build extensive worlds, visually defined by their characters and palpable moods. Working predominantly within isolated corners of small New England towns and forests, Hausthor’s images use local legends and gossip to conjure both mythical grandeur and gritty malevolence. In this image, Hausthor photographed a woman he had encountered once before, approximately 15 years ago, when he stumbled upon her in rural Vermont, at the end of a long dirt driveway. Appearing eerily still among a field of flowers, the woman in this photograph nearly seems to be subsumed by the field, almost becoming a legend before our eyes.

Dylan Hausthor received his BFA with Honors from Maine College of Art. He founded Wilt Press in the spring of 2015 and is currently an MFA candidate in photography at Yale University.
