Megan C. Ledbetter’s photographs are inspired by the deeply symbolic vanitas still-life paintings of 17th-century Europe. These paintings drew their reference from the first chapter of the book of Ecclesiastes, which explores the complex relationship between the body and spirit. In her work, Ledbetter responds to the these themes creating images that explore the love of life and the sentiment of mortality, the fragility of the body, and the vanity of earthly possessions. The image Box Grater suggests the subtle and beautiful menace in the sharp edges of this common kitchen tool.
