Raised in Johnstown, PA and based in Cleveland, OH, Jacob Koestler has meandered this cross-section of the rust belt and Appalachia as a photographer, filmmaker, educator, publisher, and musician. This photograph belongs to a series called Interrupter which exemplifies Koestler’s deeply personal connection to the mountains and industrial-ruins that comprise his home’s landscape. These images of impacted landscapes and decaying structures are further affected by “unplanned contributions”, interruptions from photographic chemicals and light leaks. Koestler’s willingness to allow these analog remnants, a mark of his own photographic presence, into his process speaks to his knowledge of the underlying history that determines what a place looks like.

Jacob Koeslter is an MFA from the Photography and Integrated Media program at Ohio University, and currently lives and works in Cleveland, OH, where he is a lecturer in the Photography and Video Department at The Cleveland Institute of Art.
